New website and 2019 preview

Welcome to my new website! I hope you’ll enjoy exploring my musical comings and goings. I’ll be updating it with news on gigs and other happenings, as well as occasional musical thoughts and musings. Lots of exciting things lined up for 2019 so far.

I’m currently in the process of preparing for my first album as a band leader. This will be a collection of my own compositions, which I’ve intended to record for a while now. Some of these tunes are as much as twenty years old, so I’m very happy finally to be documenting this music. The recording will take place in March, with a great group of musicians – Joe Auckland (trumpet) Rob Updegraff (guitar) Dave Manington (bass) and Simon Roth (drums).

In the spring, another album will be being released, from Alvorada. We’re thrilled to be sharing the first recording of this group. We’ve played so many great gigs in the last couple of years, and people have been so supportive (not least with the crowdfunding campaign we ran last year to help us fund the album production). The album is currently being mixed, and news will be announced soon about the launch gig. I’m looking forward to lots more choro gigs and rodas this year.

Ryan Williams and I have been quietly plugging away with the editing of a recording which we made in 2017. I think it represents a really nice distillation of the playing we’ve done together as a duo, and we hope to have it ready soon to share. It’s also been a while since we did a live gig, hopefully once this recording is finished then we’ll do some more.

Other things coming up include a bunch of performances with Showstopper, just about to begin a eight-week London run; an exciting project celebrating female songwriters and composers with London Vocal Project, as well as exploring some new, unperformed Kenny Wheeler music; a new album release from Afrik Bawantu; and a two-week trip to South Africa with young musicians from Haringey Music Service.

All in all, plenty to look forward to!
